Folian Public Beta Launches for Mac, Introducing a New Writing Operating System for Authors
ABL International has launched the Public Beta of Folian, a new local-first writing environment designed to help authors manage not only their manuscript, but the growing body of knowledge, decisions and context that surrounds a complex long-form writing project.

Dubai, UAE, 1 October 2026. ABL International today announced the launch of the Folian Public Beta for Apple Silicon Macs.
Folian is a writing operating system designed for serious authors and long-form writers whose projects have grown beyond the limits of a traditional document.
Writing a book rarely involves only writing the manuscript. As a project develops, authors accumulate characters, research, story decisions, continuity requirements, planning, worldbuilding and an increasingly complex body of knowledge about the work itself.
That information is often fragmented across documents, notes, spreadsheets, writing applications and AI conversations.
Folian is designed to bring it together.
More than a document
At the centre of Folian is the manuscript, with a focused environment designed for long-form writing.
Around it sits the wider context of the project.
Writers can organise and develop their work while keeping important project information connected to the manuscript, including characters, research, planning, story knowledge and creative decisions made throughout the writing process.
Rather than treating a book as a collection of isolated documents, Folian is designed around the idea that a long-form writing project is an interconnected system.
This is why Folian describes itself as a Writing Operating System for Serious Authors.
AI is optional, not the product
Folian also takes a deliberately different approach to artificial intelligence.
AI is optional.
Writers can use Folian without connecting an AI provider at all. For those who choose to use AI-assisted functionality, Folian allows writers to use their own supported API keys.
The objective is not to replace the author or generate a book on their behalf.
Instead, Folian is being developed so that AI can assist with the context surrounding the writing, helping writers interrogate, understand and work with their own project while keeping the author in control of the creative process.
Local-first by design
Folian has been designed as a desktop application with a local-first approach.
The writer's manuscript and project remain on their Mac rather than requiring the work to live inside a browser-based writing service.
This approach is intended to give writers greater ownership over both their writing environment and their work.
Built from a real writing problem
Folian began as a response to the challenges encountered while managing increasingly complex long-form writing projects.
As manuscripts became larger, the difficulty was no longer simply where to type the words. It was maintaining the growing body of context surrounding them.
What happened earlier in the manuscript?
Why was a particular creative decision made?
Which version of an idea became canon?
What does the writer already know about a character, location or event?
Where is the research that informed a particular part of the story?
Folian has been built around solving those problems without turning the writing process into project administration.
Public Beta begins
The Public Beta marks the transition of Folian from private development and testing into broader use by writers working on real projects.
The current release is available for Apple Silicon Macs.
During the Public Beta, development will continue based on real-world use and feedback from writers, with further improvements and capabilities planned as the product develops.
Folian is currently available for US$30 as a one-time purchase, with no recurring subscription required for the application.
Writers who choose to use supported AI functionality provide their own API access separately.
Building the writing environment around the writer
Folian's longer-term ambition is to create a writing environment capable of supporting a project from its earliest ideas through planning, drafting, development and revision, while preserving the writer's ownership of both the work and the creative process.
The launch of the Public Beta is the first public step towards that goal.
Folian is available now at the Folian website.
